I have to give a lot of the credit for the faculty at Realm Makers to our emcee, Ben Wolf. Ben gets around to a lot of the larger conferences throughout the year and has a gift for rubbing elbows with the right people. I supply the vision, he makes a lot of the contacts. Our connection with Tosca Lee this year is really all him.Jeff Gerke

As for Jeff Gerke, I have been bothering him at conferences like ACFW and the Greater Philadelphia Christian Writers conference since about 2009, so we’ve developed a nice degree of acquaintance at these events. Not to mention, Jeff is one of those awesome people who loves to help others grow, so he has been wonderful to offer me all sorts of industry wisdom over the past 5 years or so. Given his status as a major pioneer in the Christian speculative fiction market, he was a natural choice as our first keynoter, and continues to be a core individual I hope to have at future conferences.

So with Tosca Lee being the keynote speaker this year, a lot of us know about her fetish for bacon. Are you going to be well stocked on bacon for her?A Big Stack Of Bacon

Maybe. Maple bacon and pepper bacon if I’m feeling extra prepared. But would that make me an enabler? I bet that the Villanova dining program will have at least some kind of pork deliciousness around. I can’t be held accountable if there’s any pushing in line, if that’s the case.

And for yourself? Are you a person that likes her bacon? Or do you avoid bacon at all costs? Or do you take it in moderation? What is your bacon preference?

I believe bacon to be one of the most versatile culinary staples in the universe. If whatever you’re eating it with also involves cheese, you risk me stealing your plate while you’re not looking.

Ah, then the question begs to be asked: Fatty/Juicy or Crispy/Crumbly?

Crispy/crumbly, absolutely. I shudder just thinking about the slimy, stretchy kind. (I have texture issues with fat in general. My brother once said I trim the fat off my broccoli.)

I’m with you on the Crispy/Crumbly kind. I like it quite “burnt” my own self. 😉

So is bacon an option as a costume? Would the wearer of such a costume be in danger of being attacked for people thinking they are food?

Only if it’s space or time travel or medieval warrior bacon. My hope is that people will be well enough fed that we won’t have any incidents. Maybe I should make sure the Friday costumes-encouraged awards dinner has a bacon component, just to be safe.

Yes. We wouldn’t want the keynote speaker to cause nightmares for an ardent fan, now would we? 😉

No…I think we all give ourselves enough weird dreams without adding to them this way. 😀

Would a pig be allowed to attend Realm Makers? Would the sow have to dress in costume, or do you think people would figure it’s a costume already and leave him alone?

  1. Thanks for this interview, David! I hope your reboot brings good traffic and helps us both meet new folks we haven’t crossed paths with yet.

    • I hope so too, Becky. I’m not one that “regularly blogs” when I blog, but I see the value of a blog. Guess I just don’t like telling everyone all my secrets. 😉

  2. Great interview, guys! And, yeah, I’m all about the bacon. 🙂

  3. Great interview! And I love the mission statement of Realm Makers. I was hoping to work it into my blog post somehow, but couldn’t squeeze it in. 😉 It’s nice knowing the backstory of its creation.

    • Thanks for coming by, Nadine! I’m glad that David asked that as well.

      • For me it’s always interesting seeing what people are thinking about when they come up with things. Some times the things which are the most popular and make a lot of money are the ones which took the most planning. And then some times you get people that are seemingly doing things on the fly. In reality, their subconscious is working for them and they operate from it with their “off the cuff” ideas. They can wind up making a bunch of money too. In the end, it’s how we affected those around us though which counts the most. God knows I’ve had my share of mistakes over the years. I find that by listening to the people succeeding it causes me to grow and be more success oriented than before, even if it’s just “that” much more. Every step is in the right direction as long as I am moving forward. That’s why I asked the question the way I did. 🙂
